Benefit of Using Milestones in Project Plan

While creating a project plan, you will begin with mapping out various tasks, dependencies, Resources. While doing that, you need to remember about a very important component of any project plan: Milestones.

First you need to understand the difference between Task and Milestone.

  • Task:Task is an activity that team needs to accomplish in a defined time period. Task has a specific time duration set against each activity.
  • Milestones: Milestone allow for an additional level of control on the project for the project manager. A milestone is a reference point that marks a major event in a project and are means of grouping tasks which are related. After grouping of each task it helps project manager to identify the critical path for a given project, also is used to monitor the project’s progress. Any task with zero duration is automatically displayed as a milestone.

How to create a Milestone:
Follow the below steps to create a Milestone,
A) New Project:

  1. Create a Project within the Project Manager.
  2. Click on the Project Name, it will redirect you to Project Summary screen

B) Create a Milestone:

  • Within the Project summary, you will find Project Tasks Tab.
  • Click on Project Tasks tab of the desired project.
  • Click on New Task.
  • Create a new task and set the ‘Allocated’ value to zero

  • You also need to set the Due Date to a date after that of latest Task End Date in the logical group.

  • Once saved a Milestone is created.
  •  All the tasks with end date before the Milestone Check due date and tasks with after the start date of the milestone Check will be grouped together into this Milestone.
  • You can now view all the grouped Task and Milestone by simply clicking on that Milestone check tab within the Project Summary screen.

Features of Milestone Check

  • Milestone Check have a new feature is a set of “Task Management Buttons” on the right side of the each task. The first two of these allow to dynamic re-ordering of task and third one for insertion of new task.

  • The check-boxes to the left of each task on the milestone screen allow you to mark tasks for completion or deletion and using the Delete Selected Task and Complete Selected Tasks button we can complete that activity.
  • You can highlighted the high priority task in yellow color. To do this set the ‘Priority’ of the task to ‘High’ in the ‘Task Summary’ screen.
  • When you enable the “Use Resource Factors in milestone Check” option available days becomes calculated fields.
